Here’s what you’ll need to buy for a basic garden (without a trellis or cover):

Four planks of 4’ lumber (2” wide)

Any natural wood or man-made wood that is not chemically treated is great. Cedar and other non-rotting woods will last longer, though any wood is fine for a few years.

Five different varieties of compost

If you make your own compost, use that. If you don’t, buy several kinds of compost, mix them together, and start next year’s compost now (more on that later).

One 4-cubic foot bag of coarse-grade vermiculite

Phone ahead to make sure it's available, since this isn't a common item.

One 20-pound bag of peat moss

Weed cloth

Wood screws

A power drill

Seeds for your plants
